The gamification problem in social media

We have added achievements and streaks to Supathread, but I have been thinking about the ethics of gamification.

The concern: Gamification can be manipulative. Streaks create FOMO. Points systems can become addictive.

Our approach:

  • Achievements reward quality, not quantity
  • No push notifications for streaks
  • Cred (karma) based on community value
  • No dark patterns

Do you think gamification can be done ethically? Where do you draw the line?

Supathread implemented gamification features (achievements, streaks, karma) but the developer is questioning whether gamification can be done ethically given concerns about manipulation and addiction. They're asking for opinions on ethical boundaries and whether their approach (rewarding quality over quantity, no pushy notifications) addresses these concerns.

I think the key is making sure gamification rewards positive behaviors, not addictive ones. Duolingo streaks have helped me learn Spanish, but I also feel guilty if I miss a day. Its a fine line.
